Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. Released in 1999 for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh, it is the second game in the Age of Empires series. The Age of Kings is set in the Middle Ages and contains thirteen playable civilizations. Players aim to gather resources, which they use to build towns, create armies, and defeat their enemies. There are five historically based campaigns, which conscript the player to specialized and story-backed conditions, as well as three additional single-player game modes; multiplayer is also supported.

The Age of Kings supports multiplayer over the Internet, or via a local area network (LAN). Up to eight players can take part in one game, with all of the single-player game modes available. The MSN Gaming Zone supported the game until the service closed on June 19, 2006.[27][28] After that, various multiplayer gaming services such as GameRanger supported it.[29] Since April 2013,[30] Steam supports in-game multiplayer for HD resolution[31][32][33]
The team was less successful in resolving other issues; programmer Matt Pritchard complained following the release of Age of Empires that there was still no process by which patches could be issued. Extensive cheating in multiplayer games of Age of Empires came as a result of several bugs in the game, which resulted in Microsoft promising Ensemble Studios there would be a patch process for The Age of Kings. Upon release, there were several bugs that needed immediate attention, but the patch process was not yet ready. The first patch was released 11 months later.[40][41]
The multiplayer-only Age of Empires Online was released in 2012. While the game was freely accessible, it featured premium content which could either be earned through gameplay or purchased, enabling the player to use higher-tier equipment and new game modes. Active development of the game ended on January 1, 2014, when executive producer Kevin Perry stated that adding new content was "no longer cost effective," and announced that the game would be moving from "development phase" to its "support phase".[82] The game servers were subsequently shut down on July 1, 2014.[83]
In 2012, Hidden Path Entertainment began working on a high-definition remake of Age of Empires II, an effort spearheaded by Matt Pritchard, an original lead programmer at Ensemble Studios. On March 7, 2013, its release was announced, branded as Age of Empires II: HD Edition. It has improved graphics, widescreen support and new multiplayer options through Steam. It was released on April 9, 2013, and there was a pre-order available on April 5.[84] HD Edition received mixed reviews, with aggregate review website Metacritic assigning a score of 68 out of 100 based on reviews from 20 critics.[61] Critics agreed that the HD Edition changed very little from the original game, though Steam Workshop integration was widely praised.[85][86]
Hey guys!Following problem. I bought this game to play multiplayer against my friends. When i start a Multiplayer-Game, the FPS drops from about 500FPS to constantly 14-15. If I start a game offline, i can play with 500FPS. Each friend playing with me have the same issue while theyre in the same game as i am. Funny fact, if I start a Multiplayergame and disconnect my wifi adapter, the FPS jumps up to 500FPS and when i connect it again I get my 15FPS again. I have no idea what to do anymore.
Same problem. I tried the reddit solution and it works, BUT freezes for like 0.1 seconds every time you select a building or military unit (not villagers lol). Also, the longer gets the game, worse performance you get. Almost unplayable. I don't know if this is related or not with this solution for multiplayer though. (The freezing problem aparently is related, acording to my offline testing)
One thing you may find interesting is that multiplayer seems to works fine between 2 m1 macs. I've played several games locally, via 2 steam accounts with separate licenses of the game, without any problems whatsoever, but I just tried to play a friend the next state over and the game crashed with that "out of sync error" after about 10 seconds of play no matter what game settings were used.
I just published a CrossTie for this game that will go live tomorrow. In our testing, it seems to make multiplayer work well, but it's possible that it doesn't fully fix the issue. I'd appreciate hearing if anyone else has any luck :)
I just reinstalled the game via a fresh bottle, and was just able to successfully play two multiplayer games in a row without the out of sync issue. One game was hosted by me, the other hosted by someone else (not sure if this distinction matters these days). I am on a Macbook Air M1.
Lack of direct LAN (local area network) play is one of the reasons why many of the fans of the classic Age of Empires 2 are quick to dismiss the HD remake[1]XResearch source of the game. A LAN game is a game played by players whose computers are connected together by a local network, allowing them to avoid having to use the often slow online multiplayer servers.
The Cumans and Bulgarians, along with the Tatars and Lithuanians, bolster the current roster of civilizations to a whopping 35. Of course, each civilization that you pick for skirmish or multiplayer will have their unique perks and bonuses.

Hi Paul! I have the following question. I installed the AoE II Definitive Edition without problems using Porting Kit + Steam. I can play the game, but the multiplayer option does not work. Do you know how can I fix this? Thank you very much!
This blog post describes my lockdown project of (partially) reversing the popular 2019 videogame Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. My efforts did not only educate me about lock-step simulation and 90s coding practices, but also lead to various multiplayer hacks.
Each campaign takes a crack at spinning a historical yarn through the deeds of a specific historical figure, as is traditional for the series. Mission intros and outros do all the exposition, but there are plenty of narrative moments and scripted sequences within the missions themselves. There are multiple paths, plot twists and some elaborate set pieces, and they generally strike a good balance between a bespoke, directed experience and a sandbox. Not every mission is a winner, but even when the execution is a bit off, there's usually still an interesting hook or twist, or even just an unusual map layout, that makes it memorable.
Since the beta ended, there haven't been many opportunities for multiplayer. There's multiplayer lobbies, ranked matchmaking, spectating and leaderboards, with regional servers instead of a peer-to-peer system, and it seemed to be working fine during the beta, but the real test will be when everyone can start playing on November 14. There's still a lively Age of Empires 2 community that plays the HD version, so hopefully it will migrate over and keep the lobby browser full. I'll be playing at launch, so I'll report any multiplayer woes if there are any.
On April 9, 2013, Age of Empires II: HD Edition (later renamed to Age of Empires II (2013)) was released on Steam. The HD Edition includes both the original game and the expansion The Conquerors, as well as updated graphics for high-resolution displays.
